I returned from Des Moines, Iowa late last evening after testifying at
Stephen C. Blumberg's probation hearing. Steve Huntsberry also testified at
the hearing to his part in identifying Mr. Blumberg, Blumberg's techniques,
and criminal history.
Judge Vietor rejected most of the special restrictions requested by John
Beamer, U.S. Attorney and Michael Elbert, U.S. Probation Officer. In
addition to the normal probation requirements, Judge Vietor did rule that
Blumberg (who has never held a regular job) is required to find full time
employment, will have a midnight to 6am curfew, to stay out of abandoned
buildings, and is to notify his Probation Officer at least three hours
before going to a library or bookstore. At the library or bookstore
Blumberg is to present a notification, which will be drafted by the
Probation Office, that among other things identifies who he is, that he was
convicted of stealing rare books and manuscripts, that he is on probation,
that he may be searched upon entering and leaving, and that someone should
remain with him while he is in the library or bookstore.
Mr. Blumberg was granted a travel permit to move to Minneapolis where he was
to report to a U.S. Probation Officer today. Blumberg was directed to
receive mental health care upon release, at the time of sentencing, as Judge
Vietor reminded him. Dr. Blumberg, Stephen's father, testified yesterday
that he had a doctor in Minneapolis/St. Paul who has agreed to treat Stephen.
Mr. Beamer will be sending FOS the complete instructions as soon as the
Judge issues them. We will send the details at that time.
