Re: DUPLICATES SALES

I'd like to follow this thread in a slightly different direction. Aside
from our Idaho and Western Americana focus, our prime focus in the book
collections, we recieved many years back a nice collection of first
editons and other works of Sir Walter Scott. We've continued to add to
this collection and it is quite extraordinary, given our location and
resources.

There is, however, not a corresponding level of scholarly interest among
the professors and students at the institutions within a days drive of
here. I have no intention of declaring it out of scope, but I do wonder
about it at times.

So would I, or should I, accept as a gift another collection that is
equally not responsive to the curricular mission of this institution? This
is purely hypothetical but I think it does raise an issue of concern. If I
counsel the donor to offer the collection to another institution that
specializes in that area, we both know that the issue of duplicates and
deaccessioning would arise.

On the other hand, we can put up a notice here and see who will take any
gift no matter how far removed from their collection development
guidelines.
