This is a full-time casual position funded from October
1, 1993 through September 28, 1994, with possibility of
renewal for one additional year.

                 CURRENT JOB OPENING
Professional librarians at UCLA are eleven-month
academic appointees.  They are entitled to two days per
month of annual leave and one day per month of sick
leave.  The University has an excellent retirement
system and sponsors a variety of group health, dental,
vision, and life insurance plans.

A candidate for appointment shall have a professional
background of competence, knowledge, and experience to
assure suitability for appointment to this series.
Such background will normally include a professional
degree from a library school with an accredited
program.  In addition to professional competence and
quality of service within the library, criteria for
review include professional activity outside of the
library, University and public service, research and
other activity.

     This posting reflects a temporary 5% salary
reduction effective 8/1/93 through 10/31/93. From
11/1/93 through 6/30/94 the amount of salary reduction
will be decreased.

Description of Unit:
With grant funding from the U.S. Department of
Education, the Children's Book Collection Project Team
will comprise 1.75 FTE professional catalogers, 1 FTE
paraprofessional copycataloger, and .3 FTE student
assistant.  The Project Team will retrospectively
convert, reclassify, and/or recatalog approximately
4,900 titles from the Children's Book Collection
located in the Department of Special Collections, using
the OCLC database and ORION, the UCLA online
information system.  The members of the Project Team
will work in the Cataloging Department of the
University Research Library, under the direction of the
Project Manager.  The Project is funded for one year
(October 1, 1993 through September 28, 1994) with
possibility of funding for an additional year.

Duties:
Under the direction of the Project Manager, the
Cataloger will convert, recatalog and classify books
from the Children's Book Collection using either OCLC
variant copy or creating new copy.  Cataloging tools to
be used include Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd
edition, revised (AACR2R) as interpreted by the Library
of Congress, Library of Congress Subject Headings and
other subject and genre headings lists as appropriate,
LC classification schedules, USMARC format, Descriptive
Cataloging of Rare Books, and local policies for copy-
specific binding notes.  The cataloger will add
bibliographic records to the local and national
bibliographic databases according to USMARC format
conventions.  After training, the cataloger will be
expected to meet quality and productivity standards
established for the project.

Qualifications:
Cataloging experience in an academic library.  Good
working knowledge of the following: AACR2R, LC Rule
Interpretations, Library of Congress Subject Headings,
LC classification, USMARC format, and Descriptive
Cataloging of Rare Books.  Skill in searching and
editing on a national system such as OCLC or RLIN.
Ability to construct concise, correct notes in English
that include Special Collections copy-specific
information.  Accuracy, productivity, flexibility, and
an ability to work comfortably in a team setting.  Good
interpersonal and communication skills.  Knowledge of
ORION preferred.
