printing codes

John is certainly correct in what he says. However, I have never seen the kind
of numerical code we've been talking about in other than an offset book. And
the opposite is certainly not true--a code such as "B12.37" or some such
cannot as easily be changed on offset film or plates as the numerical form. As
to the New Yorker, I prefer to think that they could be puckish even on this
arcane topic. I consciously look at every copy I can find, and have never
discovered "987654321 First Edition" Do you suppose the book began with a
fifth printing?
