Call for catalogues

CALL FOR CATALOGUES -- Please share with your colleagues.

The Exhibition Catalogue Awards Committee of RBMS invites you to submit
catalogues to be considered for the Katharine Kyes Leab and Daniel J. Leab
American Book Prices Current Exhibition Catalogue Awards. Each year these
awards are given for excellence in the publication of catalogues that
accompany exhibitions of special collections materials. To be eligible for
the 1994 award, a catalogue must have been published between September 1, 1992,
and August 31, 1993. Entries are confined to catalogues published by U.S.
and Canadian institutions.

The deadline for submitting catalogues is September 30, 1993. To request
instructions for entering catalogues and entry forms, please contact

Elaine Smyth, Chair, Exhibition Catalogue Awards Committee/RBMS via

E-mail: NOTEBS@LSUVM.BITNET
        NOTEBS@LSUVM.SNCC.LSU.EDU
or

Fax: 504-388-6825

or write to E. Smyth / 9065 Redbud / Baton Rouge LA 70815.

You may also call, but I will be very grateful if you use e-mail, fax, or snail
mail communications instead. If you must call: 504-388-6547.

Each year a complete listing of all catalogues submitted is distributed to
those attending the RBMS Annual Preconference, so this is an excellent way
to publicize your exhibitions, even if you don't win an award.

Additional information about the awards follows.

The awards are announced each spring and presented during the Annual Conference
of the American Library Association. Criteria for granting awards include
originality, accuracy of detail, informational content, visual impact,
contribution to scholarship, and usefulness to the intended audience.
Catalogues may be of varying formats, styles, and scope (e.g., an
inclusive list of items in an exhibition, a selective list, or a narrative
with some specific citations). They may be intended for various audiences
(scholars, students, general public, a specific interest group)
and they may have various purposes (publicity, dissemination of information
about a collection, attraction of donations, commemoration of a special
occasion, etc.).

The entries are judged in three categories: expensive, moderately expensive,
and inexpensive. Catalogues are categorized according to the
production costs outlined in the entry form. The committee serves
as the jury for the selections, but may seek the advice of outside
specialists. Awards are made to the institutions organizing the exhibitions
and take the form of printed citations. A first place award and an
honorable mention are usually given in each category.

To be eligible for the 1994 award, a catalogue must have
been published between September 1, 1992 and August 31, 1993. The entry must
be submitted by September 30, 1993 (entries clearly postmarked with this date
will be accepted). Catalogues must represent, either comprehensively or
selectively, an exhibition of books and/or manuscripts that has taken place
or which is in progress before August 31, 1993. Entries are confined to
catalogues published by U.S. and Canadian institutions. To enter, an
entry form and four copies of the catalogue must be submitted to
the committee chair. All catalogues submitted become the property
of RBMS. As noted above, instructions for entering catalogues and entry forms
may be obtained from:
