I used the term "printing code" in my recent bibliography of Tolkien
(St. Paul's, 1993), qualified by the beginning and ending characters
of the code in question. Anything longer would have added a page to
my text, and I didn't have the room to spare.
Publishers' statements untrustworthy? Who ever heard of such a thing!
(I could tell you stories. . . .)
