Since I brought this up, may I suggest a solution? I only used Sequence
slugs to get your attention: it was not a proposed term, although I do like
it. I needed a term to use in a bibliography, or even library cataloguing,
such as: Third printing, according to ... I was aware that a very similar
arrangement of numbers indicates a year of publication, so it would also be
useful to refer to that, as in: Fourth printing, 1988, according to ...
It makes no difference who is responsible for altering these two kinds
of numbers for the purpose I had in mind, so, since publishers don't agree,
how about something nice and neutral for both kinds of numbers, viz.
Printing sequence numbers
I would only add that I dislike either Code or Statement as part of
a suggested phrase.
Whatever the response, I propose to bring this to the attention of the
RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee at their next meeting, as a possible
amendment to their thesaurus devoted to printing and publishing evidence.
