I, for one, am glad to be informed of Robert Maxwell's brave
attempt to secure equal benefits at LC. I salute him and his posting.
There are many, many lesbian, bisexual, and gay people in our
profession, even (heaven forbid) among the sanctified readers of
Exlibris. For many of us equity in benefits is a major concern.
Further, for anyone working in an academic institution it should have
become clear that the issue of domestic partner benefits has come to
the forefront; nearly every major university is currently considering
extending domestic partner benefits, following the lead of Stanford,
the Univeristy of Chicago, the University of Iowa, and many forward-
looking smaller institutions.
I think it is good for us occasionally to look up from our collating,
pause a moment from our contemplation of the origin of oilcloth (one
word), and pay attention to larger issues in libraries and in
academia. Thank you again to Robert Maxwell and good luck to you.
(F.Y.I, because of the activities of lesbian and gay librarians at
Columbia, we anticipate that domestic partner health benefits will be
extended here during the Fall.)
