I made history today at the Library of Congress. I filed the
first complaint of discrimination based on sexual orientation at
LC's Equal Employment Opportunity Office. The basis of my
complaint is: I can't add my domestic partner to my health
benefit policy because we are not legally married. Since gays and
lesbians cannot legally marry, we cannot receive the same
benefits that heterosexuals receive. This form of discrimination
is illegal according to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of
1964, the Human Rights Act of the District of Columbia, and
various federal codes. Our EEO office was taken aback by this but
said they would check into for me.
If you know of any way I can support my claim please contact
me at shields@mail.loc.gov
Thanks,
Rob Shields
