The Chicago Manual of Style 13th ed, 1982 has a Part 1 called
Bookmaking and in section 1.21 they refer to these as "a
seemingly cryptic line of figures" and give the following
definition:
"To avoid resetting in later printings of a book, a publisher may, instead
of, for example, "Third Impression, 1979," use a seemingly cryptic
line of figures below the publishing history.... "
Looks like we are due for a new edition of this venerable work.
