Thanks again for the responses on the novel in woodcuts.
A couple of notes:

>I think one of the more interesting pictorial novels I have
>seen from that period is by Giacomo Patri, called "White
>Collar". [San Francisco, 2nd ed., 1940].
>Milan Hughston, Librarian, Amon Carter Museum

This is a truly great work, but its publication history
is a little murky. It appears to have been privately published,
and only notes the printer on the title page. I didn't know
that it had 2 editions in 1940; it was reprinted in 1975,
but I was surprised to find out that the reprinted edition differs
slightly from the original--a last, triumphant image was added.
The preface to the 1975 edition is by John L Lewis, the UMW
leader, and suggests that the book was used in conjunction with
union activities.

> There was an article concerning Masereel and his works in the JOURNAL
>OF MODERN LITERATURE sometime in 1978 or 1979, if my memory serves me
>well.

Very close (I wish my memory was that good!)--the citation is
Cohen, Martin S. "The novel in woodcuts: a handbook," Journal of
Modern Literature, v.6, no. 2, April 1977, p. 171-195. This is a
chapter from Mr. Cohen's dissertation (the other chapters are
on unrelated topics), and it's the only critical article I've
found on the genre. I haven't been able to locate Mr. Cohen
either--he doesn't seem to be teaching at the college level.
------------
Thanks for all the help--keep those cards and letters coming.
