Re: [AMIA-L] Danse Serpentine

Do take a look at www.victorian-cinema.net, where there are photographs of
both Annabelle and Loie Fuller, which may help in your identification. It's
not difficult to tell one from the other. Not that they were the only skirt
dancers filmed at the time.

Dear Xavier,

let's have the frames. I received a similar dance as a gift to the Deutsche
Kinemathek from Bill Barnes (Barnes collection) in London in 1995. Perhaps
there will be similarities.

collection still marked as "unidentified". One of the rolls might be
Annabelle's Sun-Dance (since the dancer wears a gown with a sun and a moon
printed on) but as usual I have no reference to back up my guess. I have
already checked Harold Brown's book but this time did not help me much. The
other roll is a hand-coloured nitrate roll of a Serpentine Dance, but since
there are so many versions around the world I am rather puzzled. It could be
one of the versions that Loie Fuller (the dancer that patented the dance)
made for Pathé, but the print itself has not given me any other clue. The
last roll is yet another dance, this time with ruins in the background. All
3 rolls are about 20 metres aprox. If there is somebody who has seen one of
the many "Danse serpentine" "Seprentine Dance" "Butterfly Dance" or even
like "Billy Elliot" can contact me and I will gladly send him/her photos of
some frames. I can also send them to those adventurers who want to try it.
